  • Badash Crystal Chapter II

    BADASH & SON

    "CHAPTER II"

The days of dear old dad hanging a shingle outside his business door which read, “and son",seem to be from an era long ago and far away. It was with a hint of sadness, that longtime tableware executive Jack Badash, founder of the crystal import firm of Javit Badash, retired to Florida, in 1980. Feelings of melancholy swept over him knowing that not one of his three children was interested in continuing the glass legacy their father built over a span of 50 years.

Jack maintained ties to the industry via his consulting business and just six short months into retirement, decided he had enough rest. With a renewed vengeance, he returned to New York and started a glass cutting shop, called Badash Crystal. Shortly thereafter, he began to import crystal from all over Eastern Europe and his promise to take it easy took back seat to a thriving full time business.

If retirement fatigue hadn't set in there, wouldn't have been a chapter II to the Badash saga. As fate would have it, his only son Mark, was becoming disenchanted with his professional choice of practicing law. Although his father tried hard to discourage him, Mark insisted upon joining the business fourteen years ago.

His first job? Packing crystal orders during summer vacations as a child. He now wears the title of President while Jack is the CEO.

Mark's knowledge of crystal comes from his father's long history with glass dating back to 1936. All of the knowledge Jack acquired from his work as an 18 year old clerk at Koscherak Brothers, a crystal and gift ware importer, he passed on to Mark including a priceless education in sales, marketing and most importantly, crystal.

After a few years with Koscherak, Jack decided to branch out on his own and Javit Badash Inc. was founded. The business grew steadily over the next 35 years and the Badash name became well known among department store buyers for it's American-made, hand cut crystal tumblers, gifts and vases. Badash was the largest independent producer of hand cut, and machine cut drink ware in the low-end price range.

Today, Badash Crystal has 24,000 active accounts, with numbers that continue to grow. In 2001 alone, including stats that considered the September 11th terrorist attacks a deterrent, business grew 25%.

Ninety plus reps cover the entire United States with Showrooms in New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Northern and Southern California, Chicago, Las Vegas, Seattle, Kansas City, Michigan and High Point serving a broad customer base. Another showroom in Boca Raton, Fl. is home to the Marketing and Sales Directors for Badash. The growth of Badash Crystal continues to speak on the strength of the quality of product it imports and the price it offers from over 20 factories in Eastern Europe. Wholesale prices range from $5.00 to $175.00

Badash products are currently sold in Giftores, Department and Furniture Stores, Jewelry and Collectable Shops, Hospital and Drug Store gift shops, Gourmet Shops, Florists and House Ware Shops, Hallmark and Fine Tabletop Stores. Awards and Trophy Shops, Engravers, Interior Design Salons, Corporate Gift Buyers, Motivation Buyers, and Catalog Houses use our products. We service Hotels, Candle Stores, as well as, Theme Parks and Resort Shops.

Added to the already long list of outlets for Badash Crystal is the production of custom lines produced for numerous corporations including IBM, Walt Disney, Graceland, The Kennedy Space Center, and several others.

    BADASH CRYSTAL PROUDLY PRESENTS

    "THE JANE SEYMOUR COLLECTION"

     Previewing in Showplace 3404

    High Point Market April 17th -22nd, 2010

     Dear Accessory Buyer:

We are proud to invite you to visit our showroom listed above.

Please find our Badash Crystal 2009-20010 catalog for your perusal.

Badash Crystal quality and selectionis second to no one. Most of our product is mouth blown and hand carved by the same artisans in Europe that created for Waterford. When buyers come into our showroom, they think that Badash’s Cut Crystal Collection is Waterford, that is - until they look at our price.

We give our customers the benefit of 65 years of buying power, experience and most importantly -the respect- of offering them a fair price for the same quality of work as the company, I just mentioned. This allows us to sell you a drop dead gorgeous, gift boxed product, at a price point that matches.

Those price points from $5.00 to $250.00 and styles ranging from traditional to contemporary, enable you to service all of your customers needs through our extensive and diversified product base.

In the soft economic times over the past several years, customers have bought Badash Crystal. They did not look to buy cheap, they looked for the best quality for the best price. Our discount structure, available on quantity orders, makes our already great pricing even more attractive.

Again, we invite you to stop by our showroom and check us out-you won't be disappointed. You can call me to set up an appointment or just drop in. We're worth a look!

    Best Regards,

    Nan

    FAX TRANSMISSION: ALL SALES REPS

FROM: NAN- SALES & MARKETING DIRECTOR

Late Night Memo – Rally The Troops    March 2003

With my fear of flying helping keep my feet firmly on the ground and my backside in the

car, I get to witness quite a bit of this great land, America. The land I see is beautiful, a work of

art capturing a varied landscape on an extensive canvas. Racing past my window, broad strokes

of color cause my head to turn. I look out and see her.  My country, I love her. She is freedom

and promise. She is the Mother of hope.

While speaking with you these last few months, I listened as well as talked. I learned

from these talks that we share a deep concern about our country, it's economy and the threat of

war. Those concerns are well founded and like you, a salesman, I know what we are up against.

The Terrorists. The Stock Market. Anthrax. Dirty Bombs. Headlines. Radio. TV and their rating

games. Gas Prices and Gas Masks. Our company supports you; I salute you.

Last year our combined efforts brought about a substantial rise in company revenues.  We

did this, you and I together. I ask only that you continue to put forth that same effort and beyond

as you draw deeper within your inner strength through these insurmountable odds. Share

    information.  Win!

Throughout these moments of conversation, I planned the strategy for our advance.  An

advance, that I must admit, you’ve helped me to design.  I not only value your ideas and opinions, I welcome them. Late this afternoon, I spoke with Meleta our Texas representative.

Our shared dialogue coupled with all of you with whom I’ve spoken inspired me to write this

    memo.

Meleta’s territory is large, rural and in some parts barren. Her journey is long.  She

travels great distances between customers. There is no easy path. She must see them face to face.

A telephone call won’t do it. She advances. Her customers say, “We’re worried and scared.”

“What’s your minimum?” “I have to be careful.” “What if we go to war?”

                                                                                                                                                     Page 2

“Did your business stop during the Vietnam War or the Gulf War?” she asks.   “No.”

That’s right, it didn’t.”  “What about September 11th did you close then?” “This is different.”

“Why is it different?”  “Because.”  “Because why?” “Because, you’re scared?”  “I’m scared

    too!”

Meleta and I are both scared yes, scared that the terrorist will win this battle without

firing a shot.  Topple us within; cripple us economically through the introduction of fear,

destroying the American dream. Today this customer buys.  Today she prefers a vase to a gas

mask and a roll of duct tape.  She listens and today our flag moves forward.

We are and have become the ambassadors. Your opinions and messages travel from the

top of the world Seattle, Washington, across this great land and come to rest with me in Boca

Raton, Florida.  Our Representatives stretch from Bangor, Maine to San Diego, California,

encompassing America; we are ninety strong.

We stand as a reminder that there is a real world, one beyond the TV. Live your lives as normally as possible and convince those we come in contact with that this is, “The Peaceful Solution.”   We must sell this. It is the salvation of our country and our way of life. We

cannot let our economy fall.  Convince them that they must not stop buying.  Today the sky is not falling but if it did, we could do nothing to stop it.  As for now, we must continue on our upward path and advance. We must persist until we succeed.

Marilyn is an independent Rep living in Illinois.  Her knowledge and passion lead me to

believe her business years are many.  I respect her.  Our conversation, other than health and

family, leans only to her full agenda of clients to be seen.  We have a strong belief that our

company will one day take its place among the great ones.  Like other companies that help

breathe life into the world; we have only scratched the surface. We continue to fight.  I like her.

She makes things happen, refuses to knuckle under or accept reasons for failure.

Not once does our conversation strike a negative tone.  The melody is clear, the music soothing.

She hurries off to attend her husband who is not well.  Like so many of us, she has multiple

    jobs and responsibilities.

Kelly is a new Rep from Brown Point, Washington.  We discuss the Rep package on its

way to her.  Her children are young.  She hungers to learn, to sell and to make money. We

discuss the current economic situation. She weakens slightly.  I bolster her insecurities with one

of my many favorite quotes. “A man has only to work half a day, seven days a week to be

successful.” “He just has to decide whether to work the first twelve hours or the last twelve

    hours.” We laugh.

                                                                                                                                                     Page 3

There is always truth in jest. She promises to call me back after she receives the material.

I know she will. Many times she mentions how happy she is to talk with me and how glad she is

that I called her. I tell her it’s been my pleasure too.  Does she really know I meant it, when I

said that?  I hope so because today Kelly has poured water on my continued growth.

I draw from her enthusiasm.  It lifts me. I call the next person and then the next and as I

do, extracting from each conversation your thoughts, inspirations and prayers for peace. I

continue to pass them along as I travel the country, tap dancing on the keys my computer.

The magic of the cell phone transports me everywhere. Please believe me when I say my conversations with all of you went into this letter, not just those I mention today. Their stories are your stories also.   I started out to write a memo and drafted a novelette.  There are many more stories I can tell but that’s for another time.

Our company is a family owned business.  We believe in the American dream and we are

willing to work hard to achieve it. To show our support we have added one hundred and fifty

new items to the line.  A new catalog will come out in May. We believe.  We live the peaceful

solution.  We continue to do battle.  We advance and we lead.

In the soft economic times of this past year people bought our crystal.  You sold it to

them. They did not look to by cheap. They looked for the best quality for the best price.  This has

always been our commitment.  Again, I salute you. Inform your customers as I have that our

company is second to no one.  Our product is mouth blown and hand carved by the same artisans

that create Waterford, Mikasa, and Lenox in Poland.  I tell them to let their customers know it.

Spread the word. Move the flag.  Share information.

We give our customers sixty years of buying experience and power and most importantly

the respect of offering them a fair price for the same quality of work as those three companies I

mentioned.  This enables us to sell a drop dead gorgeous product at a price point that matches!

In celebration of our first year anniversary as Marketing Directors, Bruce and I would like to

share with you our strengths, ideas, dreams, demanding work ethic and the strategy of the plan.

    1. To keep your eyes open and see.

    2. To embrace promise and nurture hope.

    3. To listen as well as talk.

    4. To put forth effort and beyond.

    5. To share information.

    6. To accept the challenge that the path is not easy.

    7. To persist until we succeed.

                                                                                                                                         Page 4

    8. To be ambassadors.

    9. To live as normally as possible.

    10. To sell the peaceful solution.

    11. To never accept failure.

    12. To hunger for knowledge.

    13. To laugh.

    14. To draw from enthusiasm and pass it along.

    15. To believe in the American dream.

    16. To advance.

    17. To move our flag.

    18. To win.

We have been blessed with your support in this first year of learning and look forward to a long and successful relationship.  Once again we welcome your dreams and ideas, we need them.

I have mentioned many times that I looked over this company for several years before I made a

commitment.  I wasn’t kidding. It’s a great company with enormous potential.  It is constantly

growing.  It evolves.  It has committed.  I am committed.  You and I are committed to win!

Last year you rose above the crowd and stole the ball.  You can do it again. The wheel must

never stop turning.  You are the grease.

    Best always,

    Nan

We are moving fast in this category. All of these are mouth blown and hand cut in Poland.

    WHAT MAKES "LEAD" CRYSTAL?

By law for crystal to be called full lead crystal requires the inclusion of at least 24% lead oxide in the composition. The lead lends brilliance and weight to the product. Crystal without lead is still crystal, but it's more commonly perceived as glass. The lead also makes the crystal softer and more conducive to carving. This is why the lead crystal is cut and for the most part the unleaded crystal is uncut. Hand carved means the crystal item is held against a spinning stone to cut the design. It's truly artistic workmanship at its best!! Crystal without lead is not any less valuable than full lead crystal particularly when it is thick, heavy and designed such as our Sutton Galleries Items. In fact, clear uncut crystal has to be particularly fine quality because the flaws cannot be hidden by the cuts. The Krosno Glassworks is renowned for their standards of quality that can be determined by the weight, color, and clarity of the crystal.
